Carbon footprint and sustainability assessment of wood utilisation in Hungary

Abstract Forest management allows the sustained removal of significant amounts carbon from atmosphere. Within different activities in forest, wood utilisation has most man-made environmental impact which affects balance, is important to know, be able accurately identify its role climate change. This study aims determine footprint logging during based on scenario analysis national default and theoretical assortment structures (11 additional scenarios for each forest stand) within entire life cycle raw products. Based a common functional unit (100 m 3 cut wood), comparative (LCA) intermediate final cutting was performed shortwood forestry work systems beech ( Fagus spp. ), oak Quercus spruce Picea black locust Robinia pseudoacacia hybrid poplar Populus x euramericana ) stands Hungary. After obtaining results, present calculated order phases tree cycle. The distribution absolute (ACF: considered emitted CO 2 fossil biotic origins together) by exhibited following order: (6%)—spruce (8%)—beech (26%)—oak (27%)—black (33%). ACF ranking whole technological (intermediate cutting, 400 m3 wood) poplar– spruce—oak—beech–black locust. rankings studied were expanded level.
